The timing of the spill, National Audubon reported, could not be worse for birds, which are now nesting and therefore especially vulnerable in many of the places where the oil could come ashore. Said an Audubon bird conservation director: "We have to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, including a true catastrophe for birds."

National Resources Defense Council NRDC - The nation's most effective environmental action organization. NRDC "uses law, science and the support of more than 1 million members to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. Worth Magazine has named NRDC one of America's 100 best charities, and Charity Navigator has given NRDC four stars (out of a possible four) NRDC uses its' strength to counter new attempts to undermine environmental protection, and will also use it to press forward, to create new safeguards for our water, forests, wildlife, and air."

Defenders of Wildlife- "Readers Digest best wildlife charity" is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. "Their programs focus on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Defenders of Wildlife encourages protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator species for ecosystem health."

World Wildlife Fund "For A Living Planet" WWF leads conservation efforts protecting endangered species and their habitats. Now in its fifth decade, WWF works in more than 100 countries around the globe to conserve the diversity of life on earth. With nearly 1.2 million members in the U.S. and another 4 million worldwide, WWF is the world's largest privately financed conservation organization.

"Mission - Audubon and our members are dedicated to protecting birds, wildlife and our shared environment, and we carry that dedication in working with policymakers in Washington, D.C., state legislatures, and local governments across the country. However, with an almost evenly divided U.S. Congress, and new leaders emerging in states across the country, every vote on AudubonÕs priority issues Š restoring and protecting our natural legacy, securing funding for vital conservation programs, and preserving key natural resource protections will come down to the wire, and your lawmakers may cast the deciding vote!"

savebiogems.org Saving Endangered Wild Places. "Every year, NRDC (National Resources Defense Council) names 12 BioGems -- unspoiled wildlands in the Americas threatened by development -- and mobilizes citizens to take direct action to protect them. The 12 BioGems form an archipelago of wild places stretching from the Arctic Circle to the Patagonia Coast. They house stores of biodiversity. But they also house our hopes for the future. They are fast-vanishing reserves for forests, grizzly bears, jaguars, songbirds and humans as well; they are the islands of wilderness we will leave our children. Yet without urgent action, these wild places will be robbed of life by drilling, clearcutting, mining and other development. NRDC's BioGems Initiative fights to protect these exceptional lands from destruction."(with great success)
